It’s evident that more and more medical professionals are coming to understand that an individual’s sexual characteristics don’t necessarily determine what gender they identify with.

In 2011, the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law estimated that there are 700,000 transgender Americans. Often times (but not always) the individual has undergone sexual reassignment surgery, which is becoming increasingly common. According to the Encyclopedia of Surgery, there are an estimated 100-500 gender reassignment surgeries every year across the country.

Sexual reassignment surgery is a very complicated and invasive procedure, and one with many serious risks.
